Professional ExPerience

Professional experience - some highlights

My professional background spans adult education - management, teaching, curriculum design, needs analysis - adult teaching at colleges, certification training in my own business, and international corporate training, leadership development, team leadership, and organisational psychology. My work in public, private, and academic settings, supporting individuals and organisations through coaching, training, teaching, and strategic tailored programme design is always informed by psychological insight and a commitment to academic integrity and .

both personal and professional ethics.

For over a decade, I ran my own business, providing coaching and performance enhancement to clients internationally — including professionals in the public sector, academia, and elite-level sports — using hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and drawing on fields of psychology including cognitive psychology. Through my private practice, I offered both one-to-one coaching in-person and virtual via video-conferencing, and internationally accredited certification training in NLP and hypnosis, supported by my global virtual marketing team. I was an early-adopter of online learning and coaching delivery. Clients and participants joined from regions including Australia, Japan, Singapore, and New Zealand, among others. In 2011, my hypnosis work was featured in a near-full-page article in the Saturday edition of The Ottawa Citizen, an article which went national, circulating throughout the whole of the PostMedia network in Canada. It seems that this article entitled, ‘You’re getting sleepy’ by the excellent writer, journalist Bruce Deachman, is now in the newspaper archives, only accessible with payment.

In higher education in Canada, I taught business and business applications to international student groups, managing both curriculum and instructional teams. I designed and delivered courses in every business-related subject, while supporting inclusive classroom practices and integrating online learning platforms, always creating innovative ways to enhance learning and the enjoyment thereof.

In other countries my experience as a team lead, teacher, teacher-trainer and faculty mentor, involved instructional design and class teaching at the BBC in London, needs assessment, curriculum development, and training delivery for blue chip companies in Helsinki, Finland, and beyond. My international classroom settings were in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Spain, applying cross-cultural understanding and adapting content to local and organisational contexts.

In the government sector in very recent years (2022-2025), I worked in programme advising and decision-making officer roles, including case analysis, policy interpretation, stakeholder engagement, and wellness programming for the Federal Government of Canada, (Ottawa). This did offer some opportunity for activities related to my skills and background, namely, that of leading large-scale virtual wellness initiatives by invitation from the government hubs in other areas of Canada. These were focused on mental resilience, psychological safety, and workplace well-being, and were attended and enjoyed by hundreds of government employees across Canada, specifically in BC, Alberta, Manitoba, and the Maritimes.

My earlier employment experience includes work in the technology sector as a systems engineer and network analyst in London England, Napa and San Francisco, California.

Across all roles, I bring an integrative approach informed by leadership theory, organisational psychology, cognitive science, technology, and adult learning — grounded in real-world experience, and delivered with warmth, precision, and a commitment to authenticity and ethics.

academic background

Some of my academic background

I hold a Doctorate in Leadership, Learning and Organisational Psychology, with doctoral research focused on the impact of workplace stress on decision-making and working memory in leaders within higher education.

My doctoral research adopted a qualitative approach, which provided depth and richness of data through extended, one-to-one interviews, allowing for a nuanced exploration of how sustained pressure affects cognitive functioning and judgement in real-world leadership contexts. My doctoral work received academic recognition, including election to an honour society for scholarly achievement.

For any British viewers: my doctorate has been formally evaluated, with a comparative statement from the UK Department for Education confirming equivalence to a PhD throughout the UK.

Organisational psychology is inherently interdisciplinary, drawing on areas such as cognitive psychology and social psychology to understand how individuals think, decide, and behave within complex

I also hold a Master’s degree in Business and Management, and a Bachelor’s degree in Languages (German, Russian, and French), with fluency in Spanish. In addition, I am a certified teacher of adults.

My ongoing academic interests include further research into cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience as they relate to workplace stress, the toxic workplace, decision-making, working memory function, and overall cognitive performance within organisational settings.

Some of My Professional Certificates

Alongside my academic background, I have completed extensive professional training supporting my personal development work with clients across the globe:

  • Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (Society of NLP 2007)

  • NGH Certified Hypnotist (2007)

  • NGH Certified Instructor of Hypnosis (2014)

  • Neuroscience and the Science of Mindfulness – McMaster University, Ontario (2025)

  • START Suicide Prevention Certificate Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) 2024

  • Certified Teacher of Adults (1994)

These qualifications support a professional, evidence-informed approach to leadership development, mindfulness, and hypnosis, delivered within a clear ethical and psychological framework.

Personal life, hobbies, and interests

Happily married for many years, I am fortunate to live with my wonderful husband in rural Ontario. We are blessed with a substantial fur family of sweet souls we have rescued from severe Canadian winters over the years, and who bring daily joy and laughter to our lives.

Dedicated to physical as well as cognitive fitness, we enjoy going running, and regularly to the gym for strength training several times a week, and are avid foodies - no, not in the sense of overpriced restaurants with tiny portions with a teaspoon of foam on the side - but in creating our own wonderful organic wholesome meals, at least half of which are plant-based. We love being out in nature as much as possible, watching hockey, listening to/dancing to a wide range of music - from heavy metal to classical - and spending long blissful periods of time on Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, our most favourite place. For us, there's no better place to go running, breathing in the intoxicating smell of the fir trees mingled in the sea breeze, the call of the sea birds in your ears, feeling the crunch of the gravelly path beneath your feet, while seeing the vivid hues of ocean on one side and the trees and wild flowers on the other.

What else might you like to know? I was born in Canada but I grew up in England and my university education apart from the doctorate, was completed there. I speak with an English accent - from the south of England; and I write using British English. And, on the subject of writing, I am a budding author and have two books on the go, at the time of writing this (Dec 2025), one on leadership under pressure written with a co-author who is a former NHL Head Coach, and one on my own, broadly drawing on the areas of my doctoral research, together with underpinnings from cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience. You will hear more about both before the end of this year!
